FASHION FRIDAY: My Gwynnie Bee Review

Hi Friends!!

I've gotten a lot of requests for a Gwynnie Bee review on my tumblr site and after three months of using the service, I'm finally writing a review.

For those of you who don't know what Gwynnie Bee is, here's a little info:
I like to refer to Gwynnie Bee as Netflix for fashionable, plus size clothes. You go online, pick from HUNDREDS of fabulous dresses, skirts, tops and jackets, and they send them to you in the mail. You wear the clothes for as long as you want, and when you are done, you send them back and they send you more items from your list.

I used this service heavily for 3 months and here are my top 3 items that I rented:

I have never been a big online shopper because I know I'm too lazy to try to get a refund if something doesn't fit or the style isn't right, but this gave me the confidence to really order anything that looked good. I've been exposed to great new brands that I didn't even know existed!

Here are the pros and cons that I experienced from using the service:
PROS:

  • FIRST MONTH IS FREE. This is the biggest pro of them all. In fact, you probably don't have to read anything else I write below because you can try it free for a month and figure out for yourself if you like it (but please keep reading because I love you).
  • You get to try anything that catches your eye without commitment. Want to flounce around the house all day in a sequined bodycon dress? Have at it!
  • No laundry! Anybody who knows me knows that the bottom of my laundry pile is where things go to die. There are clothes there that I haven't seen for MONTHS - no lie. Gwynnie Bee does all the washing for you! Just stick it in the bag they provide and mail it in they will do all the work.
  • No postage. Does anybody even remember what stamps look like anymore?
  • Great selection. For real, hundreds and hundreds of items ALL TO FIT MY LOVELY FAT BUTT.
  • Save money on clothes you won't wear longer than a season. I can spend a mint on clothes that aren't staples and that I tire of very quickly. This is a great way to wear a bunch of seasonal clothes at a fraction of the cost that it would take to purchase them.

CONS:

  • Price. It can seem a bit pricey. I was at the 3 items at a time level for about $90 a month with taxes. It would have been greater value if I had gotten my ass to the post office sooner so I could get new clothes more quickly, but I was averaging about 6 items a month, which means I was paying about $15 per item. Which brings me to the next item...
  • Shipping. While they cover the packaging and the postage, you have to send the clothes back in those blue USPS boxes you see around town. Now I'm an inherently lazy and yet busy person and the closest blue box to my house was at the post office across town and I just really couldn't find the time or will to get there in a timely manner, which slows down your next shipment of clothes.
  • Preference: You can pick dozens of clothes to put in your "closet" and Gwynnie Bee will ship them to you pretty quickly, but you don't seem to have any say as to which of those items they send. Say you have a special event coming up and you want to wear that sparkly deal in your Gwynnie Bee closet - well, you have like a 1 in 12 chance that they will send that one out. The entire time I used Gwynnie Bee I desperately wanted to wear the ASOS floral bodycon dress that was in my closet, but it was never the one picked. They have a helpline that may have been able to help with this but did I mention how lazy I am?
So, there is my review of Gwynnie Bee and I can honestly say that it has been a very fun experience. I seriously have felt like the most fashionable lady on the planet lately. I highly recommend anybody even remotely interested give it a try - ONE MONTH FREE Y'ALL.

Note: This review was in no way sponsored by Gwynnie Bee. I purchased the service with my own money and all opinions stated here are mine.

  2. I been using this service for free for the past month. The clothes are laundered and have no scents etc. They only "rent" dresses, shirts, jackets and skirts. There are no undergarments or pants for "rent" on this site. I LOVE GWYNNIE BEE!!! It really has helped me regain confidence in my body and i have learned what works for it and not, from the different dresses/tops that I been getting.
I send my items out almost on a daily basis so I have been able to rack up the shipments and gotten at least 15 different things to wear in just one month because It is a fast and speedy service and very much worth the monthly subscription. Where else could you get "new clothes" every month for less than $100! Not to mention that my laundry pile has decreased drastically too!

  5. Thanks for the post....I just joined and can't wait to get my first item...I hope it helps my inner Fashionista to shine

  6. Can you just drop it off at the post office or do you have to use the blue box? I think, if you tell your letter carrier in advance, they will pick it up for you.

  7. If you keep it for a while, can you launder it yourself?

    1. Yes! I just joined today and read you can launder items yourself as long as you follow directions on the tag. This may mean a trip to the dry cleaners.

  8. The site says you can launder it yourself if you need to, they just ask that you read the laundry label :) Makes sense! I just ordered my first shipment today .. we'll see how it goes!

  9. Thank you for the post. I'm thinking about signing up for Gwynnie Bee, but your last con has me worried. I didn't realize you don't get a say in which item is sent next...hmm...I'll have to think about it more.

    1. If you really wanted a specific item, let your "closet" dwindle down, but continue to make a list of items you want, then when you get your special dress or whatever, load your closet back up.

  10. Your review is right on the money. The only thing I would add is that it takes a long time for them to ship your item out. Maybe I am just impatient. Thanks for the tip about calling the help line for that dress that you just got to have shipped to you!

  11. I'm psyched I signed up today and I live across the street from the post office and can't wait. I hate the mall. I hate finding a great outfit only to find they don't have my size or its a two hour drive for that outfit in my size. I hate dressing rooms, I can't really see what it looks like without the shoes or jewelry or lighting that doesn't make me look like the undead.

  12. I signed up today. The no choice thing was scary cause they did not mention that...I have very specific items that I need first. I imagine they have limited quantities of each item and the "rack" selections give them more to choose from in case certain choices have depleted quantities. That's a bummer. I did also noticed that they lean heavily on defined waists and wall paper prints...not really for mature women. I am retired and wanted some sophisticated styles.....not all gaudy and short. It's a younger person's site..meaning under 45 or so. Well, you never know so I am gonna try some new things. The month free lets me see how they look.

    1. I guess it's what you feel comfortBle in. I. Am 63 and really hate looking matronly. Maybe it would be fun to try some different things for free for a month just to see if you would be comfortable. I got a red poppy print dress and literally everyone who saw me complimented me in it. I felt awesome!

  13. I am ending my free trial now and subscribing to the 5-pieces-a-month membership. I love it! and purchasing 2 piece that I have received.

I go to serveral national conferences a year with the same ppl from ea. state and I can never recall what I have worn. I also don't have the wherewithal to keep track. This will help so much!

I do drive by a post office (w/ blue drive-up boxes) on my way to work each day so that works out well for me.

You can purchase the clothes and I have received emails about sales on the items I had at home. You can see the saleprice of any item you have on the site and from there you can get to a page that has all of the items they have for sale.

Read the reviews before selecting a size and choosing items. Also refer to the size chart for the specific item.

I think we should lobby Gwynniee Bee to: 1) allow you to prioritize your closet and then they could pick the next item available from your prioritized list. 2) ship the next garment(s) when you report the item returned on the site AND when a returned tracking number is logged on usps.com, proving your are returning an item. They could restrict accounts as needed and reward ppl who use it honestly and regularly.

    Happy 'shopping'!

  14. I paid for Gwynnie Bee for 4 months. I got the 3 pieces at a time option for around $85/month including taxes. I canceled because the shipping was way too slow and the closeting was way too hit and miss. The smaller sizes seem to be in high demand. I constantly got messages from them that they couldn't ship my order, yet I had over 40+ items in my closet. I would only get about 3 pieces per month that I actually liked enough to wear out. It just wasn't worth it for the price. The novelty was fun at first, but I just wasn't getting enough value for my money.

  15. The concept of Gwynnie Bee is exciting, but the reality is not. The shipping is too slow. This is probably due to the fact that they seem to have a low amount of inventory. They have a "closet minimum" (minimum amount of items you have to have in your closet before they will ship anything to you), but even though I have always kept at or above that number of garments closeted, I quite often get a message saying that they cannot ship anything to me yet. They have extended my trial because of that, but honestly, it just gets old. It is annoying as a trial member and it would be just plain unacceptable as a paying member, so I am sure I will cancel after my trial has ended. I wanted so badly for this service to be good and work and I was willing to put it into my budget because it is fun to search through clothes and select fun stuff to wear. Problem with Gwynnie Bee: you won't get to wear the stuff you like. Chances are if you like it, it may be a popular garment and others will like it too. So you likely won't receive it. Oh and did I mention that there is no way to prioritize your closet? If your closet minimum is 8, you have a 1 in 8 chance of getting a particular garment. I was told by customer service that if you email them they will try to get a certain item to you (say if you have a special event to attend), but since they can't seem to send me even any 1 random garment from the 9 that I have closeted, I doubt that would be successful. My advise, use them for the free month, cancel a day before your trial ends. Not worth my hard earned money.

  17. I just did 2 months of gwynnie bee, and it took me a few weeks to sign up but at firstmonth free i was sold. well that was march at may 3rd..i canceled. Too expensive, shipping too slow wich they tried to fix but only made me more annoyed cuz emailing back and forth "when are my clothes coming" with bogus answers.Anyway, i say do the free month and then shop those clothing websites..

  18. My experience with Gwynnie Bee was great for the trial period. I liked it enough to keep paying for it after that, but now the service is getting incredibly frustrating. I waited ages for a shipment, and it came to me dirty and with a hole it in. I was given a free garment upgrade for two weeks, but I'm six days in and nothing has been shipped. I keep emailing and asking when they'll get to my stuff and if the shipping delays will continue, but it's like they're sending me a generic script and telling me all my items are too popular. I absolutely recommend the trial period, you've got nothing to lose. I would never, ever recommend the paid version. Dirty, damaged clothes and slow shipping times are unacceptable.

  19. Tell me more about purchasing something you really love....is it too expensive like when you lease a car?

  20. Please do not give this company your credit card information. They will continue to charge your card even after you have cancelled and them refuse to do anything about it!!

  21. Do not sign up for this service. I have been charged over $250 and have NEVER RECEIVED ANY SHIPMENTS FROM THEM!!!! Their answer, sorry it's a subscription service so we can't refund your money. AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL customer service.

  22. I may be all alone here, but $90 a month is NOT being spent on clothes over this way. Plus, I'm so forgetful, I'd have the first outfit in thep ackage in my closet for 6 months, and then be mad that they've charged me $450!
